• Over 90 Design24 submissions received from across the country and all disciplines
• Designs showcase current building technologies, from vertical gardens to wind turbines and digital broadcasting
• Curation and judging process is underway. Winners to be announced 4 April 2014

Judging is underway for Design24, Media24's official World Design Capital project to redesign the exterior of the Naspers Centre on Cape Town's foreshore. By the time the competition closed at the end of February, 94 entries had been submitted. Submissions were received from architects, industrial and graphic designers, artists, students, and urban planners, among others. The submissions came from across South Africa.

Anika Ebrahim, head of Corporate Communications for Media24, said: "Together the entries form a collection of inspired ideas that have helped us to see the future of our headquarters building in so many different ways. Some are very extravagant, while others are very simple. But whichever designs are chosen as the winners, the submissions perfectly showcase our country's incredible talent and creativity."

The designs are also a snapshot of current building technologies and contemporary design ideas. Many entries feature techniques to help generate and also save energy, such as wind turbines in various forms and solar shading ideas. Roof gardens, vertical gardens and ideas to improve the public space around the building are also featured. The building was controversially repainted some years ago, so some submissions have proposed a reinstatement of the original facade design. Art, digital imagery and broadcasting techniques have also been proposed, as well as innovative ways to use lighting, glass and various other different materials — some which were surprising and unusual. Ebrahim continues: "Our judges have a unique opportunity to find the face of our building's future. The winning one will be the physical expression of our deep roots in the Mother City. We've been here for 100 years, and we love it here."

The proposals are being passed through a curation process in the hands of independent curators, before the internal Media24 judges make their final decision about who the top three winners will be. The winners will be announced on 4 April. For more information on the competition, visit design.24.com
