Venture’s Riley DSO project gets enviro nod
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The Tasmanian Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has given its approval for ASX-listed junior Venture Minerals to develop its Riley direct shipping ore (DSO) project.
The approval was, however, attached to a number of conditions in relation to water quality, the protection of threatened flora, the protection of wildlife and site rehabilitation.
EPA chairperson John Ramsay said that, after careful consideration, the board had concluded that the Riley mine could be managed in an environmentally acceptable manner, provided that environmental permit conditions were imposed and complied with.
Venture told shareholders on Thursday that the EPA’s decision followed two years of detailed environmental studies, with MD Hamish Halliday noting that the company had taken a rigorous and comprehensive approach to its environmental responsibilities.
“Riley is an important asset for the company, as it generates near-term cash flow with minimal capital risk, delivering major benefits to shareholders and the broader community of north-west Tasmania.”
He added that the deposit was entirely at surface, which not only reduced the operating costs, but also resulted in a low environmental impact, with no waste rock produced, no need for a tailings dam and no remnant openpit at the conclusion of mining.
Venture was hoping to start production at Riley in the second half of this year. The development schedule included an approvals review period by the commonwealth government, as well as a statutory appeals period, and the time needed for the construction of a rail siding, site works and production ramp-up.
