Project Description
The project involves the construction of two new nuclear units, located at the VC Summer nuclear power station site near Jenkinsville, in South Carolina.
The two new 1 117 MWe Westinghouse advanced pressurised water reactor, or AP1000s, will share a site with an existing pressurised water reactor that has been in operation since 1984.
The AP1000 has 85% less cable, 80% less pipe, 50% fewer valves and 35% fewer pumps than the current generation of reactors.

Latest Developments
The pouring of the first concrete – the recognised event by which construction on a new reactor is deemed to be officially under way – was completed on March 11, 2013.
The basemat provides a foundation for the containment and auxiliary buildings that are within the nuclear island. Measuring 1.83 m in thickness, the basemat required an estimated 5 350 cubic metres of concrete to cover an area about 76 m long and 49 m wide.
