Boeing was committed to supporting the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in its safety review of the 787 Dreamliner, chairperson, president and CEO Jim McNerney said.

The FAA on Wednesday ordered US operators to temporarily ground the 787 aircraft, to deal with a “potential battery fire risk”.

The followed recent incidents of battery failures on 787 aircraft in Japan and the US.

“The battery failures resulted in the release of flammable electrolytes, heat damage, and smoke on two model 787 aeroplanes. The root cause of these failures is currently under investigation. These conditions, if not corrected, could result in damage to critical systems and structures, and the potential for fire in the electrical compartment,” the US body stated.

The FAA would work with Boeing and carriers to develop a corrective plan to allow the US 787 fleet to resume operations as soon and safely as possible.

Other countries, such as Japan and India, have also grounded the 787 aircraft in their countries.

McNerney stated that the safety of passengers and crew members flying aboard Boeing aeroplanes was of high priority for the manufacturer.

“We are confident the 787 is safe and we stand behind its overall integrity.  We will be taking every necessary step in the coming days to assure our customers and the travelling public of the 787's safety and to return the aeroplanes to service,” he said in a statement.
