PERTH (miningweekly.com) – South Africa-focused coal miner Universal Coal has started hot commissioning of its dense media separation (DMS) circuit at its Kangala washing plant, about 65 km east of Johannesburg in the Witbank coalfield in Mpumalanga.

Once completed, the DMS plant would allow Universal to produce export-quality thermal coal at Kangala, which would be exported through the Richards Bay Coal Terminal from the end of July onwards.

In April, Universal sold its first coal from the Kangala mine, after production was started in February this year.

Hot commissioning has now begun, with full operations through the circuit poised to start on June 23. At design capacity, Kangala would produce 2.4-million tonnes a year of coal.

Following the successful commissioning of the DMS plant, Kangala would ramp up to steady-state production volume during the next quarter.

Meanwhile, Universal also noted that it was finalising its New Clydesdale colliery acquisition. The project would be combined with the adjacent Roodekop project to fast-track Universal’s development of a second operation.
