State-owned power utility Eskom concluded the third round of salary negotiations with unions National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) and Solidarity on May 25.

NUM revised its wage hike demand down to 11% and Numsa demanded 12%, while Solidarity revised its demand to 9.5%.

Eskom made an offer of 5.25%, which all three trade unions rejected.

However, all parties reached a settlement on the amendment of the grievance and disciplinary procedures, Eskom said in a statement.

The fourth round of negotiations is scheduled for June.

"Eskom is hopeful that it and the labour unions will find each other for the benefit of the company and in the best interest of the country," the struggling utility said.

The tariff increase of 18.65% for direct customers took effect on April 1 and the 18.49% increase in electricity tariffs for municipal customers will take effect from July 1. Eskom originally applied to the National Energy Regulator of South Africa for a 32% hike.

In the first round of negotiations, NUM and Numsa demanded a 15% salary increment while Solidarity requested 10.1%. Eskom responded with a 3.75% offer, which was later increased to 4.5%.
