Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS), in the Western Cape, and Witzenberg local municipality.

Project Description
Witzenberg local municipality experienced serious water problems during the 2004/5 drought period, specifically in the town of Tulbagh. An investigation was conducted in 2008, which quantified all available water resources (surface water and groundwater). The investigation found that there were major inadequacies around the available water resources in Tulbagh, Wolseley, and Prince Alfred Hamlet.

The project will supply an additional 450-million cubic litres of water to the region.

Potential Job Creation
The project will bring significant socioeconomic benefits, including much needed job opportunities during construction.

Capital Expenditure
The project is estimated at R48-million and is being co-funded by the DWS.

The DWS has supplied R43-million to the project through the Regional Bulk Infrastructure Grant, with the Witzenberg municipality providing R5-million.

Planned Start/End Date
Construction started on November 5, 2021, and is expected to be completed by July 2022.
