Name of the project and location
Timbuktu manuscripts project, Mali.

Project description
The project will involve the construction of a library, which will host some of Africa’s most treasured history, the Timbuktu manuscripts.

The new library will boast modern exhibition facilities and will use the latest technology to preserve the manuscripts. The library will initially house 23 000 manuscripts, but will have the capacity to accommodate 100 000 manuscripts as the collection grows.

The library will be built using indigenous materials and construction methods, which focus on the use of mud and clay. The construction of the building using these methods will not only ensure that it blends in with the surrounding environment, but will also ensure that it is naturally cool, as temperatures in the city can reach between 45°C and 50°C in summer.

Value
R50-million.

Duration
Construction of the library will be completed by the end of 2007.
