Test mine to try out new technologies is a great idea

Hats off to the South African mining industry for planning a test mine for Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) technology try-outs. The industry needs to go all out to be globally competitive, having slipped back on productivity and production. The faster the Minerals Council South Africa team completes its feasibility study, the better, as mining looks like entering a commodity super cycle as the renewable energy, electric mobility and intense climate change migrations are implemented. The industry needs to be putting its best foot forward and the kind of people-centric 4IR approach the Minerals Council is proposing will give South Africa the best of safety, jobs and competitive efficiency. Mines and suppliers will be able to put their advances through their paces and see that underground efforts in particular work as envisaged before major investments are made.
