When the ambitious US start-up, Planetary Resources, burst on to the scene a year ago to announce that it had succeeded in obtaining financial backing to make preparations for the mining of platinum in outer space, people thought they had gone crazy. But judging from the troubles South Africa’s platinum miners are suffering at the hands of their workers, market and government they might do worse than to leave terra firma and join the platinum space race. On the face of it, the terrestrial industry is being confronted by just as much risk and expense and also has no return in sight.
