Tennessee mines, US
Name: Tennessee mines.
Location: The Tennessee mines are located in the state of Tennessee, in the US.
Controlling Company: Nyrstar.
Brief History: In May 2009, Nyrstar acquired the Middle Tennessee (MTN) zinc mine complex, which had been on care and maintenance since October 2008. Later that year, Nyrstar acquired the East Tennessee (ETN) zinc mine complex, establishing Nyrstar Tennessee Mines by merging the operations of MTN and ETN.
First operations at ETN date back to 1856 and the current mines have a combined history of more than 60 years and MTN a mining history of about 40 years.
Brief Description: The MTN operations consist of three under- ground zinc mines – Gordonsville, Elmwood and Cumberland – and a processing plant, all located in Smith County, Tennessee. The ETN complex consists of a mill and three underground zinc mines – Young, Coy and Immel. The mines are located in and around Knox, Jefferson and Grainger counties.
Mining Method: Underground
Products: Zinc concentrate.
Major Infrastructure and Equipment: Ore from the ETN mine complex is processed at the Young mine site, while ore from the MTN mine complex is processed at the Gordonsville zinc mine complex. ETN and MTN have a close association with Nyrstar’s Clarksville smelter.
Geology/Mineralisation: Zinc mineralisation at the ETN and MTN mine complexes occur in Mississippi Valley-type deposits as open-space fillings of breccias and fractures within limestone and dolomites.
At MTN, the zinc mineralisation contains recoverable amounts of germanium and gallium.
Reserves: Total proven and probable reserves at the ETN mine complex, according to a report published on February 7, were 3.96- million tonnes, with a grading of 3.5% zinc.
Total proven and probable reserves at the MTN mine complex, according to the same report, were 3.23-million tonnes, with a grading of 4.70% zinc.
Resources: Total measured and indicated resources at the ETN mining complex, according to the report, were 5.98-million tonnes, with a grading of 3.3% zinc. Inferred resources were 16.3-million tonnes, with a grading of 3.9% zinc.
Total measured and indicated resources at the MTN mining complex, according to the report, were 4.92-million tonnes, with a grading of 4.6% zinc. Inferred resources were 14.79-million tonnes, with a grading of 3.6% zinc.
Prospects: The ETN mine and MTN mine complexes have a long history of resource replacement and, with drilling planned in 2013, it is expected that both operations will replace all the tonnage mined in the year.
