PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The Tembang gold/silver project, in Indonesia, was on track to pour its first gold before the end of the year, owner Sumatra Copper & Gold said on Tuesday, announcing that development of the openpit mine had started.

“The overall project plan remains on schedule and a significant milestone has been achieved with the start-up of openpit mine development. Our safety record is outstanding and the project and operations team on site are performing to a high standard,” said Sumatra MD David Fowler.

Meanwhile, about 170 artisanal miners and local landowners have been inducted into the company’s pre-employment training programme, and Sumatra expected that artisanal mining activity would soon cease in the area. Sterilisation of illegal mining activities within the active mining area was also being carried out by the government-led integrated team.

At full production, Tembang was expected to produce about 33 000 oz/y of gold and 345 000 oz/y of silver, at a cash operating cost of $470/oz.
