Telkom takes stand against strike intimidation
Telecommunications giant Telkom on Monday obtained an urgent interim court order against the Communication Workers Union (CWU), barring striking trade union members from blocking access to the group’s property and intimidating working employees.
Following reports of around 100 CWU members blocking access to the Telkom Campus in Centurion, harassing, intimidating and physically restraining employees from entering the group’s property, and several reported blockades at yards, Telkom moved to halt interference with its operations and the blockading of any of the company’s properties.
"Telkom will not tolerate the sort of thuggish behaviour we witnessed today. Telkom spent months negotiating with all organised labour and were greatly encouraged when South Africa Communications Union and Solidarity signed the Collaborative Partnership Agreement on June 2.
“At the time, CWU’s leadership indicated their intention to sign the agreement but, to date, that has unfortunately not happened,” said Telkom spokesperson Jacqui O’Sullivan in a statement on Monday.
The striking workers are now barred from intimidating and threatening Telkom’s nonstriking staff who want to enter Telkom premises and perform their duties or from preventing visitors, contractors and customers from entering and leaving the premises.
The striking members were also ordered to remain 50 m away from Telkom premises.
“Telkom has met the unions on so many of their demands, such as a moratorium on retrenchments, a cap on outsourcing and a guaranteed increase next year, so it is disappointing to not only see industrial action from the CWU, but for it to be accompanied with aggressive intimidation of our employees, while blocking access to our campus and some facilities,” O’Sullivan concluded.
