Telecommunications operator Telecom Namibia has partnered with NewTelco South Africa (SA), represented by Jasco Co-location Solutions, to establish four international points of presence (PoPs) connected to the West African Cable System (Wacs) undersea cable.

The PoPs, to be located in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Frankfurt and London, would be procured and built by NewTelco SA for exclusive use by Telecom Namibia.

While the infrastructure was being built, Telecom Namibia would make use of NewTelco’s existing infrastructure.

The strategic location of the four PoPs would enable the operator to offer its customers in South Africa and abroad direct connections to a number of existing and future undersea cable systems, including Wacs, Seacom, Eastern African Submarine Cable System, SAT3, the Africa Coast to Europe submarine cable and the Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa submarine cable system.

“This not only provides for a fault tolerant international service platform, but also provides an opportunity to benefit from an optimised pricing model as traffic can be routed over any of these cable systems,” Telecom Namibia said in a statement.

The four PoPs formed the first phase of a larger solution and the telecommunications operator planned to establish additional PoPs and extend its national infrastructure in future phases.
