The Chamber of Mines of South Africa last week elected Mike Teke as its incoming president.

Teke takes over the reins from outgoing president Mark Cutifani. The Anglo American CEO has had a whirlwind one-year term of office in which he was heavily engaged in far-reaching negotiations with the South African government.

Teke, who has been serving as vice president for the last year, is the founder of Dedicoal and a nonexecutive director of the JSE-listed coal-mining company Optimum Coal, which is now in the GlencoreXstrata group.

The chamber’s 123rd annual general meeting (AGM) also saw Anglo American South Africa executive director Khanyisile Kweyama elected as first vice-pre-sident and Harmony Gold CEO Graham Briggs as second vice-president.

Minerals Minister Susan Shabangu spoke of Cutifani’s “frank” approach and reminded the sector of the need to be more coherent in its messaging to stakeholders in dealing with the current challenges the sector is facing.

The newly elected office bearers take up office with immediate effect, until next year’s AGM.
