PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Dual-listed iron-ore developer Tawana Resources has temporarily suspended all its nonessential field activities in Liberia, in response to the Ebola virus.

A state of emergency was declared in Liberia on August 6 to mitigate the spread of the disease within the country and across international borders. According to the World Health Organisation, Ebola has claimed more than 900 lives. The epidemic has also hit Sierra Leone, Guinea and Nigeria.

Tawana said on Friday that while the current drilling programme at its Mofe Creek project had been temporarily suspended, all other activities associated with the project’s prefeasibility study which did not require direct field presence would continue in Liberia and Australia.

All nonessential local staff, contractors and expatriate staff would return to their homes in the coming week.

ASX- and TSX-listed Tawana was hoping to have a pilot-scale bulk mining and pilot plant at its Mofe Creek operational by the start of 2015, while commercial production was targeted for 2016.
