PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Junior iron-ore developer Tawana Resources has crossed another hurdle in the development of its Mofe Creek project, in Liberia, having been granted permission to progress its environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA).

“The approval to progress the ESIA confirms the Environmental Protection Agency’s and Tawana’s commitment to an interactive and cooperative process with the community and associated stakeholders, to define and quantify the environmental and social aspects of the project," said Tawana executive chairperson Wayne Richards.

“The approval likewise provides the company with the go-ahead to collect baseline data and processes required to submit our final ESIA report, in preparation for the ultimate granting of our environmental-impact assessment permit.”

The final submission for the ESIA document was expected in the third quarter of next year.

The Mofe Creek scoping study had estimated that the project could deliver between 1.2-million and 1.5-million tons a year of iron-ore, for start-up capital of $53-million.

The project's prefeasibility study was currently under way.
