Tanzania/Zanzibar submarine cable interconnector project.

Project Description
The project involves the manufacture and installation of a 40-km-long, 100-MW submarine electric transmission cable, including fibre-optic shield wire, from Ras Kiromoni, in mainland Tanzania, to Ras Fumba, in Unguja, the main island of the Zanzibar archipelago.

Value
The US government will invest $45-million in the project. The funding is part of a $698-million grant, under the Millennium Challenge Corporation, to fund water, energy and infrastructure projects in Tanzania. To date, a total of $206-million has been allocated to energy projects.

Duration
Scheduled to go on-line by the end of 2012.

The Millennium Challenge Account -Tanzania (MCA-Tanzania) on behalf of the governments of the US and Tanzania, in collaboration with the Zanzibar Electrical Company.

Millennium Challenge Corporation (financing); ESBI (consulting engineer and engineering, procurement and construction supervisor); Viscas Corporation (cable installation).

Latest Developments
The signing of a contract for the manufacture and installation of a new 100-MW submarine power cable took place in April 2010.
