Synology Cloud² (Synology C2), a NAS backup solution formally launched to market late last year, is preparing to evolve far beyond a cloud backup service.

C2, designed in-house and running on Synology’s own public cloud, is proving a runaway success, prompting Synology to broaden its C2 offering.

Along with Synology NAS, C2 is aiming at building a new Synology hybrid cloud ecosystem with many Synology services incorporated. Users will see further integration with the likes of DiskStation Manager, enjoying a more seamless user experience. To enhance data safety without all the hassle, users may rely on Active Backup Suite integration in order to create another layer of data protection to C2.

Ultimately, users will be able to enjoy a more comprehensive backup experience as they can back up PC, virtual machine, or even physical servers directly to C2, completing a thorough and secure backup journey.

C2 was initially designed for both businesses and home users, allowing users to back up files stored on their NAS, for data safety and availability.

With their high-level software development capabilities and a lengthy track record of focusing on storage and backup technologies, a 20-member Synology engineering team set out in 2016 to develop superior backup services at a very competitive price.

The team quickly mastered unfamiliar technologies such as OpenStack, as well as the design of system framework and applications in a short period of time, seeking to transcend the software development realm to design a model based on current market pain points and users’ needs.

Synology’s C2 beta was released in March 2017 and it was officially launch in September 2017. Uptake has been phenomenal, and C2 now provides all-around data protection for over 16,000 users, with around 1,400 new users coming aboard each month.

C2 has also brought over 1.5 million USD revenue to Synology in its first year and fast-tracked the construction of a second and third data centre in Germany, to meet global demand.

Having started with private cloud services, Synology is now building on its history of providing reliable IT solutions, with its first steps into the public cloud sector to take data protection to the next level.

Synology at a glance
