Name and Location
Suleimaniah gas power station conversion project, Iraq.

Client
Mass Group Holding.

Project Description
The 1 000 MW Suleimaniah open-cycle gas turbine (OCGT) power plant comprises eight gas turbines.

The power plant operates primarily on natural gas, with diesel as the secondary fuel when needed.

The project involves converting this existing 1 000 MW OCGT power plant to a more energy efficient combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant by adding eight 250 MW heat recovery steam generators (HRSG) and two steam turbine generators, bringing the total generation capacity of the power plant to 1 500 MW.

The efficiency of the plant will improve significantly from about 34% efficiency at the OCGT operation to an estimated 55% efficiency after the conversion to CCGT.

The conversion includes the installation of two air-cooled condensers to cool the CCGT operation.

The existing gas pipeline connection will not require expansion.

Electricity transmission from the CCGT operation will be through the existing 132 kV transmission lines.

A new 400 kV transmission line system connecting various power plants, including the Suleimaniah project site, is planned.

The length and the route of the new transmission line is still to be determined. This includes the installation of a 400 kV switchyard within the existing Sulaymaniyah site.
