Name and Location
Styldrift Merensky Phase 1 project, North West, South Africa.

Client
Royal Bafokeng Platinum (67%) (RBPlat) and Anglo American Platinum (33%) (Amplats).

Project Description
The Styldrift project area is adjacent to the existing Boschkoppie mining area. The mine will exploit one of the last major Merensky mining blocks on the Western Bushveld. About 60-million tons is expected to be extracted over the life of the mining operation between 2015 and 2043.

The mine will process 230 000 t/m of Merensky reef and 20 000 t/m of waste at steady state.

The project will deliver an underground operation, which will be accessed through a twin vertical shaft system, with the main shaft being sunk to 758 m and the service shaft to 723 m. Production will initially be through wide-reef trackless mining methods and later through narrow-reef conventional mining methods.

The Styldrift project site is located about 5.5 km from the existing Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine (BRPM).

During steady operations, the mine will produce about 220 000 oz/y of platinum, effectively doubling BRPM's platinum ounce production to about 400 000 oz/y.

Shaft site infrastructure will comprise the twin shaft system, associated mining surface infrastructure concentrator plant and the waste rock dumps.

Value
R11.8-billion.

Duration
The project was approved by the boards of Amplats and Royal Bafokeng Holdings (RBH) during the third quarter of 2008.

First production is expected to start in the second half of 2015, while steady production is expected to start in the second half of 2018.

Latest Developments
Amplats reports that both vertical shafts have intersected the Merensky reef horizon at the 600 m level, where the station infrastructure for both shafts is being developed.

Meanwhile, in January this year, Sandvik Mining was selected by RBPlat as the key supplier of underground production trackless equipment.

Phase 1 of the project generated a single order in the last week of December 2012 for 83 machines, comprising mostly low-profile 8 t LH208 LHDs, DD210-L drill rigs and the fully mechanised DS210L-M roofbolter.

Delivery of the machines will take place during 2014, but various other projects, such as the related apprenticeship training programme, the community up-skill programme and the current Sandvik-sponsored community day-care project, in the Boshoek area, will benefit much sooner.
