Strukton Delivers Static Converters For South African Locomotives

Strukton Rolling Stock delivers new static converters for Transnet Engineering’s Class 18E locomotives. The static converters replace the current motor alternators which are suffering from high maintenance costs and obsolescence issues. The contract comprises of deliveries for a first set of seven locomotives (14 units) with options for more deliveries. The first set of converters will go through an extensive test programme which starts in the second half of 2014.
Class 18E locomotives are one of the most important locomotive types in South Africa with over 700 units in operation. The new converters have six different outputs and are equipped with an innovative cooling mechanism to withstand the harsh temperature conditions. Especially when locomotives are coupled and have to break inside tunnels temperatures can rise to extreme values.
Director Gert Kwikkers: ‘We are very pleased with this new order from Transnet Engineering which further establishes our position in the important South African market. Also in this project we are able to provide real value through our experienced engineering team. The core of the system comprises of our standard power modules and by adding ingenious engineering, Transnet Engineering will have a cost-efficient and reliable solution.’
The first set of static converters will be designed and produced in the Netherlands and technology and production will be transferred to Transnet Engineering to create local jobs and contribute to Transnet Engineering’s supplier development goals.
