Unprotected strikes at Exxaro’s Matla and Arnot coal mines, in Mpumalanga, have resulted in production stoppages but with no immediate threat to the functioning of the coal-fired Eskom power stations that the mines serve.

The diversified JSE-listed resources group said last week that the industrial action was related to the nonpayment of performance bonuses after the operations had failed to achieve their performance targets.

Exxaro said employees of the two mines had been kept informed of perform- ance levels and bonus payments.

The mines had implemented contingency plans to ensure sufficient coal supply to the Matla and Arnot power stations.

The Matla mine had 19 days of coal supply available and the Matla power station had two days of supply on hand.

There was no risk to the adequate supply of coal to the Arnot power station from the Arnot mine.

Exxaro said it would continue to work closely with Eskom to ensure the availability of supply to the State utility’s two power stations.
