Steenhuisen appoints Mazzone as DA’s chief whip
Newly elected Democratic Alliance (DA) parliamentary leader John Steenhuisen announced on Thursday the appointment of Natasha Mazzone as the party’s chief whip.
Mazzone was the DA’s Shadow Minister of Public Enterprises.
Steenhuisen stepped down as chief whip following Mmusi Maimane's resignation as federal leader. DA caucus chairperson and acting parliamentary leader Annelie Lotriet explained that as Steenhuisen was appointed as chief whip by the previous parliamentary leader, who had resigned, Steenhuisen had had to automatically step down.
Steenhuisen in his new role expressed confidence in Mazzone, citing that having served with distinction as a Member of Parliament for the past decade, she brought an ideal balance of knowledge, grit and levelheadedness to this crucial position.
“During her time as the DA’s Shadow Minister of Public Enterprises, Natasha worked tirelessly to strengthen the democracy by leading the charge against the pervasive corruption and maladministration in our State-owned enterprises,” he added.
Deputy chief whip Jacques Julius will remain in his position following his election in May of this year.
Meanwhile, DA spokesperson Solly Malatsi has been appointed as parliamentary counsellor to the DA parliamentary leader.
“I am confident that this talented and diverse team has what it takes to spearhead our fight for the interests of all South Africans, and in particular those left behind by the failing ANC government,” said Steenhuisen.
