Steel production increased by 16.5% y/y in May

World crude steel production for the 64 countries reporting to industry association the World Steel Association (worldsteel) increased by 16.5% year-on-year to 174.4-million tonnes in May.

Africa’s output increased by 65.1% year-on-year to 1.3-million tonnes in May, while output in the Middle East increased by 16.8% year-on-year to 3.7-million tonnes.

The European Union produced 13.5-million tonnes - a 32.7% year-on-year increase – while other European countries’ output increased by 36.9% year-on-year to 4.2-million tonnes.

The Commonwealth of Independent States produced 9.1-million tonnes - a 14.8% year-on-year increase.

North America’s steel production increased by 47.7% year-on-year to 10.1-million tonnes, while South America’s output increased by 49.7% year-on-year to 3.9-million tonnes.

Asia and Oceania produced 128.4-million tonnes, up 11.7% year-on-year. This includes China’s production of 99.5-million tonnes.

The 64 countries reporting to worldsteel account for about 98% of total world crude steel production.
