PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Gold miner St Barbara has evacuated some 200 personnel at its Gold Ridge operation, in the Solomon Islands, following torrential rains.

The miner said this week that extreme rainfall, which had subsequently developed into Tropical Cyclone Ita, had forced the company to cease openpit operations and to stop processing at the Gold Ridge operations.

The ensuing flooding caused significant damage to main roads, including the only access road to the mine site and a key bridge, which isolated the mine site from critical supplies of fuel for on-site power generation, as well as food and medical supplies.

St Barbara told shareholders that, in addition, the openpit mine experienced flooding and significant damage, and security risk escalated to unacceptable levels, potentially endangering the personnel on site.

As a result, the company took the decision to evacuate the mine site.

St Barbara said this week that it was in discussions with the Solomon Islands government regarding the future of the mine after all activities at the mine were suspended.

During the six months to December, the Gold Ridge operation produced 29 431 oz of gold, which accounted for some 15% of the company’s total gold production during that period.
