Southern African air cargo committee head Alwyn Rautenbach has died
The Airlines Association of Southern Africa (AASA) has announced that the head of the Air Cargo Operators Committee, Alwyn Rautenbach, died on Wednesday (February 10) following a long illness. The committee is an associate member of AASA, and he had headed it since 2006.
He was also executive manager: cargo at South African regional airline Airlink, which he joined in 2005. Prior to that, he had worked for the national flag carrier, South African Airways (SAA).
AASA CEO Chris Zweigenthal described Rautenbach as “a true legend and friend” of the region’s aviation industry. Rautenbach had represented the air cargo industry in its interactions with regulators and governments throughout Southern Africa.
“Alwyn was a giant in the aviation industry, and I know Airlink, who (sic) he loved very much, will miss him,” affirmed AASA acting chairperson and FlySafair CEO Elmar Conradie. “But the whole industry has suffered a big loss and he will be missed across the industry by the people he interacted with.”
“Wherever Alwyn worked, he made an impact with his expertise, knowledge and the ability to get the job done,” recalled Zweigenthal. “During his time at SAA, he was actively involved in supporting the business activities of AASA, and this carried through to his time at Airlink where he provided expert advice and input to important industry matters.”
Rautenbach is survived by his wife Sarie, and children Liesel, Yolande and Wayne, as well as by two grandchildren.
