PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Diversified miner South32 has upgraded the resources at its Cannington silver mine, in Queensland, and its Illawarra metallurgical coal operations, in New South Wales.

It confirmed a 21% increase in the estimated mineral resource at the Cannington mine, which now stood at 71-million tonnes, grading 170 g/t silver, 4.86% lead and 3.26% zinc at the underground project, and 21-million tonnes, grading 78 g/t silver, 3.23% lead and 2.07% zinc at the opencut operation.

The increase in the Cannington mineral resource was owing to changes in foreign exchange rates and commodity prices, as well as the inclusion of a mineral resource previously excluded in areas identified to transition from opencut to underground, and along the perimeter of the potential opencut pit shell, offset by depletion.

South32 also upgraded the coal resource and reserves at the Illawarra project, following additional drilling over the past two years, and owing to it obtaining extraction approval for longwall panels.

The Illawarra project is now estimated to host a total coal resource of 1.28-billion tonnes and a reserve of 157.6-million tonnes.

Meanwhile, South32 also reported a maiden sands ore reserve at the GEMCO Australian manganese project, a joint venture with Anglo American.

GEMCO is now estimated to have a run-of-mine ore reserve of 82-million tonnes, grading 44.8% manganese, and a sands reserve of 7.6-million tonnes, grading 40% manganese.
