Solidarity’s application to force State-owned Denel to pay over Unemployment Insurance Fund levies and taxes deducted from employees’ salaries to the relevant authorities will be heard in the Pretoria High Court on Tuesday.

Solidarity on July 31 served urgent documents on the struggling arms manufacturer, alleging that the UIF levies and taxes had not been paid over by Denel and that the State-owned firm had been unable to pay employees’ salaries in full for those months.

According to Solidarity legal services head Anton van der Bijl, the legal steps taken by Solidarity are twofold, and will also address the matter of the statutory mandatory payments indicated on employees’ pay slips which were never paid over to the South African Revenue Service.
