Solidarity rejects 4.6% salary increase for coal workers
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Trade union Solidarity on Friday rejected the Chamber of Mines’ (CoM’s) offer of a 4.6% salary increase for its members who are employed in the coal sector.
The union expressed its discontent with what it said was the CoM’s delays in making an initial offer, as this would prolong the negotiation process, which had been delayed several times, unnecessarily.
“We request the chamber to revise the offer so that the negotiations can continue in a constructive way.
“The chamber must focus on a combined offer that includes all the mine houses because it is necessary to promote collective bargaining in the industry,” Solidarity energy industry head Deon Reyneke said.
He further expressed hope that the CoM would consider Solidarity’s demand to raise the retirement age of aboveground workers from 63 to 65 and that of underground workers from 60 to 63.
“The chamber already conditionally approved the raise of the retirement age of workers in the gold sector. We demand that this positive step also be taken in the coal sector,” he added.
