Name of the Project
Small modular reactor (SMR) module development facility.

Location
Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, in the UK.

Project Owner/s
Rolls-Royce SMR.

Project Description
The Rolls-Royce SMR draws upon standard pressurised water reactor (PWR) technology that has been used in hundreds of reactors worldwide.

The power station will have the capacity to generate up to 470 MWe of low-carbon energy, equivalent to more than 150 onshore wind turbines and enough to power a million homes for 60 years.

The entire power station will be built using about 1 500 standard transportable modules, manufactured and tested in off-site factories to minimise activity on site.

The modules will be categorised under heavy pressure vessels; mechanical, electrical and plumbing; and civil engineering.

The modules will be assembled on location within a compact site footprint. Each SMR unit will fit within a site ‘canopy’ measuring 21 500 m².

Latest Developments
Rolls-Royce SMR welcomed the decision by the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Emma Reynolds on March 13 to provide regulatory justification for the Rolls‑Royce SMR design – the first SMR to receive this approval in the UK.

Regulatory justification is an important step in the approvals process for new nuclear power plant designs, as it ensures that the benefits and potential detriments of a new nuclear technology are fully assessed before construction can proceed.

This announcement comes as the Rolls‑Royce SMR progresses through the third and final stage of the UK Generic Design Assessment, which includes a public comments process. This enables people to review the design and provide feedback.

Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
