ČSM mine, Czech Republic
Name: CˇSM mine.
Location: CˇSM mine is located in the eastern part of the Karviná coal district, in the Czech Republic.
Controlling Company: OKD, a wholly owned subsidiary of New World Resources.
Brief History: The construction works for CˇSM began in 1958 and operations began in 1968. In 2005, CˇMD, which owned CˇSM, merged with OKD.
Brief Description: The CˇSM mining licence covers the cadastral area of Stonava, Karviná, Albrechtice u Cˇeského Teˇšína and Choteˇbuz. The mine is structured on two sites – North and South.
Mining Method: Longwall caving using shearers and shield sets.
Products: Hard coking, semisoft coking and thermal coal.
Major Infrastructure and Equipment: The North and South mining sites each have a pair of intake and return-air shafts. The intake-air shaft at the South site is the deepest at 1 103 m, dropping to 826 m below sea level, while the pit bank is at 277 m above sea level.
The preparation plant, with a 1 100 t/h capacity, is located at the North site.
The coal mining equipment has been mechanised, owing to the thickness of the coal seams and geological conditions. The main production method is longwall caving using shearers and shield sets. Entries are developed mostly by roadheaders; blasting, which combines the use of drill jumbos or loaders, is not used as much.
Geology/Mineralisation: The Ostrava-Karviná coal basin is a part of the Upper-Silesian basin, most of which is located in neighbouring Poland. The whole area covers about 7 000 km2, of which only an estimated 1 500 km2 is in the Czech Republic. The basin comprises the territory surrounding Ostrava, Karviná, Cˇeský Teˇšín, Frenštát pod Radhošteˇm and other towns, where coal-bearing layers of Carboniferous age are found.
In the Ostrava-Karviná region, the Ostrava and Karviná strata series are distinct. The Ostrava strata series was formed in a coastal environ- ment and under the influence of volcanic activity and is characterised by high-quality coal in seams of less thickness. The younger Karviná strata series was formed after the ultimate recession of the sea.
Reserves: Total proven and probable reserves as at January 1, 2013, were 42-million tonnes, comprising 24.1-million tonnes in proven and 17.9-million tonnes in probable reserves.
Prospects: Owing to a significant capital expenditure development in the 1990s and especially after 2000, the mine’s life has been extended to at least 2028.
Contact Person: Chief external relations officer Petr Jonák.
