Project Description
The Site C clean energy project will be a third dam and hydroelectric-generating station, to be built on the Peace river in north-east British Columbia. It will provide 1 100 MW of capacity and produce about 5 100 GWh/y of electricity – enough energy to power the equivalent of about 450 000 homes a year in the province.
As the third project on the Peace river, Site C will reuse the water flowing downstream from the two upstream facilities and simply pass it along.
This will enable the site to generate about 35% of the energy produced at the WAC Bennett Dam, with only 5% of the reservoir area.
Value
The project is estimated at C$8.34-billion. In addition, a C$440-million project reserve has been established by the British Columbia provincial government to account for events outside BC Hydro’s control such as higher-than-forecast inflation or interest rates.
Duration
Construction on the project started in 2015 and is expected to be completed in 2024.
Latest Developments
BC Hydro awarded the main civil works contract for the Site C project in December 2015. The contract is valued at $1.75-billion and includes the construction of an earthfill dam, two diversion tunnels and a roller-compacted concrete foundation for the generating station and spillways.
