Sisulu pleased with upgrade at the Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment Works
Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation Minister Lindiwe Sisulu has welcomed the progress that has been made towards the upgrading of the Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment Works to restore it from its severely deteriorated state.
Sisulu visited the facility on April 14 to conduct an inspection at the plant and to properly understand the concerns that were raised by the South African Human Rights Commission after the community lodged a complaint with the Chapter 9 institution and to ensure the facility operates optimally.
The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation, during its oversight visits to the facility in 2019 and 2020, instructed the City of Tshwane to urgently resolve the water and wastewater challenges.
Sisulu said that she was confident that the upgrade that was carried out at the treatment works was bearing fruit.
All excavations to the design levels have been completed, as well as the full fully installation of two X belt presses and the dredging of the maturation dam. Chlorine is supplied on an ongoing basis.
The Minister also committed to the reprioritisation of the Urban Settlements Development Grant for the further renovation and upgrading of the facility.
Sisulu’s was accompanied on the site visit by City of Tshwane executive mayor Councillor Randall Williams and his delegation, as well as officials from the Department of Water and Sanitation, led by Gauteng provincial head Sibusiso Mthembu.
