Project Description
The project aims to repurpose a disused mine at Broken Hill into a 200 MW/1 600 MWh fuel-free energy storage facility. The project will operate by compressing air during times of low electricity prices, storing it and releasing it through a turbo-expander to generate electricity during times of high demand and high energy prices.
Once built, the project will be one of the world’s biggest compressed-air projects, providing at least eight hours of storage.
More than 11-million metric tons of carbon dioxide – equivalent to the emissions of about 50 000 cars a year – will be displaced over Silver City’s life span that exceeds 50 years.
Potential Job Creation
The project is expected to create more than 350 full-time equivalent peak construction jobs, with the majority of these workers being sourced from the local Broken Hill Region.
Capital Expenditure
A$652-million.
The Australian Renewable Energy Agency conditionally approved $45-million in funding in October 2022 to build the project.
