Name and Location
Sibanye Gold solar power project, Gauteng, South Africa.

Client
Sibanye Gold.

Project Description
In 2014, Sibanye completed a prefeasibility study (PFS), investigating the potential of solar power as an alternative source of electrical power to partially insulate the company from the effects of electricity supply interruptions from State-owned power utility Eskom.

The PFS confirmed that solar power provided an economically competitive solution for Sibanye’s electricity requirements.
Sibanye proposes to establish a solar photovoltaic generating plant, with a peak generating capacity of 150 MW, which represents a substantial portion of Sibanye’s overall 500 MW power demand. The operation will provide an estimated 10% of Sibanye’s electrical energy requirements when averaged over the course of a day.

Value
Sibanye is considering a phased R3-billion investment.

Duration
Sibanye expects to start independent generation of captive electricity for its operations during 2017.

Latest Developments
A site large enough to host a 150 MW installation, with limited potential for other land use, has been identified close to Driefontein.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
Sibanye intends to submit permitting applications early this year.

On Budget and on Time?
Not stated.
