PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The Northern Territory’s Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has granted conditional approval for junior Sherwin Iron to proceed with its Sherwin Creek iron-ore project.

Sherwin said on Tuesday that the EPA’s issue of its environmental assessment was a major step in the approval process for the project, which would allow for full-scale mining to start within the next few months, subject to federal approval.

It was hoped that federal approval would be granted within the next month.

Sherwin reported that it was in the process of completing its mining management plan for the Sherwin Creek project, which would incorporate the recommendations contained in the EPA’s report.

Sherwin plans to construct a direct shipping ore operation at Sherwin Creek, in the hopes of producing some 1.5-million tonnes a year of ore during 2014.

Ore production would be increased to two-million tonnes a year afterwards, increasing successively to three-million tonnes a year by 2016/17. The project would reach operational completion by 2019.
