Sese integrated power project, Botswana
Name of the Project
Sese integrated power project.
Location
Botswana.
Client
African Energy Resources (AFR).
First Quantum Mineral (FQM) acquired a 51% interest in the Sese project in January 2015, which will be increased to 75% by investing a further A$10-million by July 12, 2017.
This investment will be used to fund the evaluation and development of the proposed Sese integrated power project.
Project Description
The project is proposing a power station complex with its own captive 1.5-million-tonne-a-year coal mine. The Sese coal licence contains five-billion tonnes of low strip ratio coal.
A$3-million of FQM’s A$10-million investment into the integrated power project will be used for:
• additional large-diameter drilling to collect about 1 000 kg of coal for combustion testing and physical-handling testwork.
• preliminary geotechnical evaluations of the proposed power station site to assess subsurface conditions with respect to footings for the power station (boilers, turbines, generators) and ancillary infrastructure.
• updating environmental approvals to allow for up to 450 MW of power generation (staged development of
2 × 225 MW units) and the associated coal mining and processing.
• updating the mining study to meet the requirements of fuel delivery for a 450 MW integrated power project.
• the preliminary power station design and layout.
• negotiations for power offtake agreements with interested parties.
• execution of the water supply agreement for the project.
• hydrogeological studies at the mine site to characterise aquifers to allow for mine design and aquifer management plans to be advanced.
• the start of early site works to include an upgraded access road and preliminary siting of camp facilities.
• diamond drilling to test the continuity and quality of the Seswe limestone deposit for use as a sorbent to reduce airborne sulphur emissions from the proposed power station.
