Scarborough gasfield development, Australia
Name of the Project
Scarborough gasfield development.
Location
The project is located in the Carnarvon basin, about 375 km west-north-west of the Burrup Peninsula, in Western Australia.
Project Owner/s
Woodside (73.5%) and BHP (26.5%).
Project Description
Woodside is proposing to develop the Scarborough gas resource, which has a contingent resource of 7.3-trillion cubic feet and supports the recovery of volumes of more than 500-billion cubic feet per well.
The new offshore facilities will initially have seven high-rate, subsea gas wells tied back to a semisubmersible floating production unit moored in 900 m of water close to the Scarborough field. Gas will be transported by an estimated 430 km pipeline to onshore processing infrastructure on the Burrup peninsula.
Potential Job Creation
Not stated.
Capital Expenditure
$11.4-billion.
Planned Start/End Date
First liquefied natural gas is targeted for 2024.
Latest Developments
The National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority (Nopsema) has approved Woodside’s Scarborough project, following an assessment of its potential environmental impacts.
Nopsema’s acceptance of the offshore project proposal (OPP) is a significant step forward for the proposed development of the Scarborough gas resource, which is being progressed on a revised schedule owing to the current uncertain global investment environment.
The OPP is the primary Commonwealth environmental assessment document for the project in Commonwealth waters, and forms the basis for future activity-specific environmental plans, which also have to be approved by Nopsema.
CEO Peter Coleman has said that Woodside can continue work to ensure that it has all the necessary regulatory approvals and commercial agreements in place to ensure a final investment decision can be taken for Scarborough in 2021.
Woodside reported a 52% increase in the resource volume at the Scarborough field in January this year, from 7.3-trillion cubic feet to 11.1-trillion cubic feet.
