South Africa's headline producer inflation quickened to 7.7% year-on-year in February from 7% in January, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) said on Thursday.

Economists polled by Reuters had predicted PPI would quicken slightly to 7.25%.

Prices at the factory gate rose by 1.3% on a month-on-month basis in February, compared with 1% previously, and against market forecasts of a 0.8% rise.

Stats SA releases five industry-specific producer price indices, with final manufactured goods representing the headline number.
