Salga asks Treasury not to withhold some municipalities’ equitable share allocations
The South African Local Government Association (Salga) on Thursday called on the National Treasury not to withhold the equitable share allocations of 27 municipalities for failing to honour payment commitments to State-owned power utility Eskom and water boards.
The association noted that, following a meeting between representatives of the 27 municipalities, in Menlyn, Pretoria, on Tuesday, several proposals were made on how the various challenges the municipalities faced could be resolved.
“Salga will hold urgent talks with the National Treasury and the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs to present the recommendations of the meeting.
“Until that meeting happens, Salga recommends that the National Treasury put on hold the withholding of the equitable share and for Eskom not to execute its threat of cutting off electricity to these municipalities,” the association said in a statement on Thursday.
Further, municipalities had also been engaging with various stakeholders, particularly Eskom and provincial treasuries, to find resolutions to the challenges faced by the municipalities.
