SABMiller appoints Rio Tinto's Du Plessis as chairperson designate
JSE-listed brewer SABMiller announced on Wednesday that Rio Tinto chairperson Jan du Plessis would join its board as nonexecutive director in September and would take over as chairperson of the group in 2015.
He would succeed current chairperson John Manser at the conclusion of the group’s annual general meeting in July next year.
Manser last year took up the position of acting chairperson, while then chairperson Graham Mackay took a leave of absence while he was receiving treatment for a brain tumour.
Mackay passed away in December, and Manser agreed to defer his retirement from the SABMiller board for one year.
“I am delighted that Jan has agreed to join the board. He has not only an excellent record as a chairperson of major international groups with developing markets footprints, but also a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of international consumer businesses.
“I look forward to working with Jan over the coming months before handing on the chairmanship next July,” commented Manser.
Du Plessis, who is chairperson of Rio Tinto and Rio Tinto Limited, is also a nonexecutive director of Marks and Spencer Group. He will step down from the Marks and Spencer board in the first half of 2015.
Rio Tinto noted in a separate announcement that Du Plessis’s focus would, going forward, be on chairing the Rio Tinto and SABMiller boards.
Du Plessis assured shareholders that his appointment to the SABMiller board “does not in any way diminish my strong commitment” to Rio Tinto.
“I am excited about the excellent work that [Rio Tinto CEO] Sam Walsh and his management team are doing to deliver greater value for shareholders. I have assured the board of Rio Tinto that I would like to serve as chairperson for several more years, subject of course to the board and shareholders wishing me to do so,” he added.
Du Plessis has degrees in commerce and law from Stellenbosch University and is a qualified chartered accountant.
