South African Airways (SAA) was set to reduce fuel use, enhance safety and decrease travel time with the implementation of new procedures and technology on board its aircraft.

The Required Navigational Performance - Authorisation Required (RNP-AR) procedures, which would use advanced on-board navigation technology and space-based global positioning system signals, would cut flight time by five to ten minutes and save the carrier over 600 000 kg of fuel a year.

The airline would be able to improve safety, particularly when flying in areas with limited ground-based navigational infrastructure, as well as decrease its operational costs and increase revenue, increase scheduling integrity and reduce its environmental impact, SAA chief pilot and head of flight operations Captain Johnny Woods said.

Currently, SAA was using the new flight procedures in all weather conditions on flights into and out of Cape Town International Airport following the South African Civil Aviation Authority’s approval.

The technology would now be rolled out into SAA’s regional and international network.

The new procedures were the result of a partnership between SAA and Quovadis, a subsidiary of Airbus ProSky.

“This milestone signifies South Africa’s readiness for a wider performance-based navigation deployment in line with recommendations set out by the International Civil Aviation Organisation,” Woods concluded.
