A year after it opened its doors, the South African Paint Manufacturing Association’s Centre of Excellence, will likely close down permanently before year-end owing to “government and industry apathy”, executive director Deryck Spence said on Tuesday.

The training facility, based in Springs, opened in June 2013 to address skills shortages in the coatings sector and offer practical training for paint applicators.

Spence claimed the indifference of paint contractors to take responsibility for “low competency levels” and train applicators, as well as government’s inability, despite the training levy paid to it by the industry to introduce training for applicators, was responsible for the centre’s impending closure.

“Government is simply not prepared to subsidise industry to undertake training that is vitally needed,” he explained, stating that government should empower the business sector to train people for the skills industry needed.
