SA concerned with Trump’s decision to cut WHO funding
The South African government has come out against US President Donald Trump’s decision to cut funding to the World Health Organisation (WHO), calling it a “regrettable decision”.
Trump said he was halting funding to the WHO over its handling of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Trump has come under fire for his own administration’s response to the virus in the US, which has become the epicentre of the virus.
“It is alarming that this very regrettable decision is announced as this deadly virus strikes Africa and the poorest and most vulnerable States,” said the South African government.
Government said it was alarmed that Trump’s decision came during a global pandemic, hindering WHO’s capacity to provide support.
As cases escalated at a rapid pace, Trump’s announcement will have a significantly adverse impact on the WHO’s programmes, and the world's ability to fight and eliminate the pandemic, government said.
“We believe that, more than ever before, the WHO deserves increased support from member States in particular to bolster its efforts to suppress transmission and stop the pandemic,” government urged.
WHO was the sole global health agency with the core focus on universal healthcare, as such its efforts to coordinate a genuinely global response against this scourge should be recognised and supported, added the Department of International Relations and Cooperation.
“We are hopeful that the government of the United States will reconsider its decision and re-join the international community in fighting this pandemic,” said the South African government.
