Cape Town-based Cobham South Africa received the Best Performer Award in Systems & Equipment for its supply of satellite communication antennae to civil aircraft manufacturer Airbus.

It received the award at Airbus’s Best in Class 2015 Partner Awards, which acknowledged eight suppliers’ outstanding contribution.

The antennae, which are manufactured at Cobham South Africa’s facility in Westlake, Cape Town, are installed in all Airbus jetliners, from the 124-seat A319 to the 550-seat A380 superjumbos and the new midsize ultralong-haul A350 XWB airliner.

Airbus builds over 50 aircraft a month. Cobham South Africa is one of 7 200 direct suppliers to Airbus.

“The award is a further testament to the innovative engineering expertise residing in South Africa’s aerospace and advanced technology sector,” the company said in a statement.

Other South African suppliers include Centurion-based Aerosud and Denel Aerostructures, in Ekhuruleni.
