The project is a joint venture between Afritech Energy and East African Power.

Project Description
As part of the Rwandan government’s initiative to extend incentives in the energy sector and other sectors that are critical to making the country a private sector-led economy by 2020, it intends to build four hydropower plants, which include:
– the 5.3 MW Bihongora hydropower plant on the Bihongora river in Kanama sector;
– the 700 kW Karambo II hydropower plant, on the Karambo river, in the Rubavu district;
– the 1.3 MW Gatare-Sebeya hydropower project in Kanombe sector, Rutsiro district, in the Western province; and
– the 4.2 MW Muregeya Cascades on the Muregeya river in the Mushubati and Mukura sectors, in Rutsiro district, which comprises four separate hydropower plants.

Value
$40-million.

Duration
Construction of the Bihongora and Karambo II projects are scheduled to begin by mid-2016, while Gatare-Sebeya and the first of the Muregeya Cascades projects will begin in late 2016.

The first four projects are expected to be on line by 2018.
