SYDNEY (miningweekly.com) – Mining giant Rio Tinto on Wednesday said that it hoped to start production at its La Granja copper project, in Peru, by late 2017.

Speaking at the first day of the Paydirt Latin America Downunder conference, in Sydney, project director Ian Woods noted that the project had tier-one potential.

“We believe the project has world-class potential and can be a top ten copper producer in the future,” Woods told delegates.

The La Granja project is considered to be one of the largest undeveloped copper deposits in the world and has a current drill-inferred mineral inventory of 2.8-billion tons, at 0.51% copper and 0.11% zinc.

Woods said that Rio was undertaking a phased development strategy for the La Granja project, allowing the company to manage key risks that face most greenfield copper projects, while also maintaining the option to expand the project in the future.

“We have done a lot of work on the project in the last few years on our processing options and we demonstrated that the ore is amenable to heap leaching. We have a strategy where high-grade ore would be sent through a concentrator to maximise recovery, while the lower-grade ore would go through a leaching process.”

Rio was currently undertaking a prefeasibility study on the project, as well as exploring the peripheral areas for additional resources.
