Name and Location
Resolution copper project, Arizona, US.

Client
Resolution Copper Mining is jointly owned by Rio Tinto (55%) and BHP Billiton (45%) and managed by Rio Tinto.

Project Description
The Resolution copper project is situated in Superior, Arizona, in the vicinity of the depleted Magma copper mine, and is one of the world’s top ten undeveloped copper resources. The project has an estimated resource of 1.6-billion tonnes grading 1.7% copper. At full production, the project is expected to produce more than one-billion pounds of copper a year.

Value
An estimated capital investment of more than $6-billion will be needed to bring the project to production.

Duration
Production is expect to begin in 2021.

Latest Developments
The project is currently in the prefeasibility study stage and $1.6-billion would have been spent by the end of 2013. However, development of the mine hinges on exchanging land with the US government, first proposed by Resolution eight years ago, but the exchange has yet to win approval from Congress, owing to opposition from environmental and native American groups.
