JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – The reprocessing of bulk sample tailings at West Africa-focused diamond developer Stellar Diamonds’ Tongo kimberlite dyke project, in Sierra Leone, has yielded additional diamonds and increased the average grade by 29%, the company announced on Tuesday.

The undiluted diamond grade had increased from 120 carats per hundred tonnes (cpht) to 155 cpht, with the resource size currently being independently estimated at 1.1-million carats, with the potential to increase further.

“Tongo continues to yield excellent results, underpinning the project's significant potential. This grade [of 155 cpht] compares very favourably with the previously calculated resource grade and should impact positively on project economics, as well as the resource size,” Stellar CE Karl Smithson said.

He added that the final bulk sample to complete the 1 000 ct parcel was currently being extracted and processed, with the final grade and value data expected to be available in August.
